A post election thought: we get the leaders we deserve
As the dust begins to settle and the political wrangling begins, I think it's important to emphasise this: after all our efforts to get people to see sense, remember that we get the leaders we deserve from a moral perspective. Who do we deserve? What can we do to deserve better?
When God judges societies, it seems from precedent that lack of tzedek and mishpat and lack of respect for other people and their possessions are the chief prosecutors. God sealed the fate of Noah's generation when He saw a society whose moral fabric had disintegrated, and the proof was the fact that people stole from one another as a rule.
R. Yisrael Salanter is quoted as saying: spiritual life is superior to physical life, but someone else's phyiscal life is your spiritual life.
I sometimes look around and wonder whether some people have it the other way round: everybody else's spiritual life is your physical life!
Just saying...
