Beit Shemesh Elections New party: Tov for the Jews or not?
In advance of the Beit Shemesh elections some community leaders have come out strongly against "new parties" and go so far as to say that voting for such a party will have disastrous and far reaching effects for our community and communities throughout the land.
Underpinning a statement like this is the directive to the people to vote for the known and trusted representatives of the chareidi community.
What bothers me here is the fact that the real victim of this kind of political manipulation is us - all of us. Because when a party's power is secured by decree then where's the incentive for the elected politicians to show results? Where's the motivation to work hard for the good of all of us?
Where's the accountability to the voters? The answer is that there isn't any!
So you might say: "but the politicians are accountable to the community through the leaders who support them."
This might be true to a point but given the amount of resistance to change, there would have to be an enormous scandal to provoke the leadership to embrace change. Meaning that the politicians have a lot of room to mess up before they're called to account.
Bottom line is: no competition=no accountability, leaving too much room for complacency, laziness and corruption.
